Jenny Nirgends

Jenny Nirgends is a Los Angeles based filmmaker and artist working within animation, alternative photographic processes, puppets and sculpture. Her works meld found objects, sounds, and stories into surreal miniature worlds. Often working intuitively her films tend towards visual explorations of the interior, vacillating between experimental analogue films favoring abstraction and narrative animated shorts. Her films can take the form of a visual metaphor explored through texture and color, a melding of photographic archives and recreated scenes, or narrative autofiction performed by objects and puppets.

She graduated from Michigan State University with an BA in Film Studies, and went on to receive an MFA in experimental animation at the California Institute of the Arts. Her films have played in the USA and internationally at film festivals and have been featured in programs at REDCAT, Film Forum, Oberhausen, & LAAFF.

When she is not working on her own films you can find her behind the scenes of commissions and commercial projects for clients such as IKEA, Brain Dead, Adidas, Coach, Drink Willies and bands that range from Olivia Rodrigo to The Hives in roles varying from director, animator, fabricator, art director.

She is a faculty lecturer in animation and animation history at Cal State Los Angeles.
